D&D session 02-12-08 notes

Prior to me even starting to write this our group has completed the campaign, collected all the rewards, grabbed the plot hook for the next module, and have started off to put an end to a slaving group. Fortunately I am slowly catching up to my notes. After this one I only have two left to do until I’m back in line with the campaign.

Doing our best not to gag from the smell of rotting flesh we entered the room. The source of the smell was immediately apparent. The floor was strewn with corpses in various states of decay. There was definitely something unsavory going on as more than a few appeared to have been gnawed upon.

Just as the thought of zombies crossed our minds, the corpses began to rise and lumber towards us. We hadn’t faced much undead, but we were definitely up to the challenge. It didn’t take us very long to return them to death and move further through the dungeon.

Next we came to what appeared to be a shadowy underground cathedral lit by glowing crystal columns. In the center by an altar a priest had a dagger raised high and was shouting praises to Orkiss. There were several trickles of blood leading out of the altar and down into a hole in the floor. Along with the blood four chains lead down into the darkness below.

Tapi started things off by loosing several arrows into the priest before he had noticed we were there. Several cultists and a few undead minions were skulking around out of sight. We made quick work of the lot of them, and did a quick sweep of the room to make sure nothing was hidden.

Coming up from the hole was the sound of more chanting. Clearly another ritual was going on below us. Strangely we couldn’t find any means of getting down below. We didn’t want to waste any time, so we took the direct approach and started climbing down the chains.

This may not have been the best plan. Healicus and myself slipped on the bloody chains and started to fall. We tumbled into Tapi and he fell as well. Fortunately for us the blood had collected in a shallow pool and served to cushion our landing.

We didn’t have much time to take in our surroundings. There was another priest, who we later found out to be Kalarel, down here performing the ritual to open the dark portal. In fact we could see the portal was already starting to form, something was behind it straining against it apparently trying to get out. We had clearly interrupted Kalarel’s ritual, and he wasn’t happy about this. He and his few minions in the room quickly attacked us.

We didn’t see it at first, but there was a glowing blue symbol on the floor in front of the portal. Elowyn walked through it during the fight, and was quickly attacked by whatever was trying to come through the portal. This may have been what finally convinced him that we should not let the portal be opened. When we killed Kalarel his body was dragged through the portal to whatever monstrosity was on the other side.

After the fight we destroyed the blue summoning circle and the book containing the ritual.
